 | Who is a deacon?
Deacons are ordained ministers just as priests and bishops. In a special way deacons are considered to be "helpers" of the bishop. They render assistance on the bishop’s behalf to the poor and needy of the community. To understand the deacon’s ministry, it is important to see deacons as ministers of the word, the liturgy and charity.
Ministry of the word
The deacon’s most solemn ministry is to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and preach the Gospel message to God’s people. For example, deacons are often engaged in adult religious education, counseling, retreats and faith formation of children and young people.
Others find themselves involved in marriage preparation programs for the engaged, activities to help enrich family life and other sacramental programs such as RCIA (Rite of Chrisitan Initation of Adults).
Ministry of the liturgy or altar
The deacon can serve in several different ways within the liturgy. Yes, deacons proclaim the Gospel and preach. Deacons are also extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist and may officiate at Benediction. Deacons are allowed to administer sacramentents, administer baptism, witness and bless marriages, and officiate at wakes, funerals and Christian burial services. Frequently, deacons bring communion to the sick and homebound. |
