2008
PARISH YOUTH HONORS AND RECOGNITION
Sponsored by the Office for Evangelization and Faith Formation

Deadline is over - Thank You for your submissions!

In baptism, we as Catholics have become “living stones” to be “built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood.” Through our baptism we share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. We live out our baptismal call by living as a disciple of Christ, witnessing our faith by exhibiting morals and integrity, demonstrating Gospel values through service to others, and exhibiting Christian leadership. It has been the tradition in the Diocese of Greensburg to recognize young men and women in our diocese who are moving into young adulthood along this journey in an outstanding way.

The nominees for the Parish Youth Honors demonstrate that they are living strong Catholic lives; lives marked by an active faith, moral integrity, leadership, and service. Those eligible to be nominated are graduating high school seniors or first year college students (or young adults one year out of high school) who have participated for at least three years in parish life or a youth ministry program in their parish and/or region. Pastors and/or youth/young adult ministers are invited to nominate young people to receive Parish Youth Honors and Recognition.

The Nomination Process

Graduating high school seniors or first year college students (or young adults one year out of high school) who have participated actively in parish life or a youth ministry program in a parish or regional level for at least three years are eligible to be nominated for Parish Youth Honors.

Nominations come from pastors, youth/young adult ministers, or other adults in the parish or region who know the young person well enough to determine his or her qualifications for the honor and recognition.

Nominations must be received in the diocesan Office for Evangelization and Faith Formation no later than Friday, May 30, 2008. The nomination forms will be prepared for the selection process by the office (see accompanying explanation of the selection process).

The Selection Process: The Nomination Assembly

An assembly of regional youth directors will meet on June 17 6:30 p.m.at The Bishop William G. Connare Center, near Greensburg to review the nominations.

To avoid bias in the nominations, each nomination form will receive a code number. This number will appear on both the cover sheet giving personal information about the nominator and the nominee and also on the pages that provide space for the nominator’s responses.

Prior to the Nomination Assembly, all personal identification will be removed from the nomination forms.

All the nominations will be reviewed by all the members of the assembly.

In a spirit of discernment, the members of the assembly will select 10-12 nominees who meet the criteria for Parish Youth Honors in an outstanding way.

Nominees not selected to receive Parish Youth Honors will still be recognized.

The youth nominated for Parish Youth Honors will be invited to write a reflection on an issue pertaining to the Catholic Church today. These reflections will be sent directly to Bishop Lawrence E. Brandt.

On August 3 Bishop Brandt will present Parish Youth Honors and Recognitions at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg. The candidates named by the nomination assembly will all receive recognition pins.
