GREENSBURG — Residents of Indiana and Latrobe and an Indiana social service agency will be honored with 2011 Communities of Salt and Light Awards from Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Greensburg at the 13th annual awards dinner April 28 at Stratigos Banquet Centre, North Huntingdon.

Joseph Angelo, a parishioner of St. Thomas More University Parish, Indiana, will receive the award for humanitarianism. Janice and Michael Walker, parishioners of Holy Family Parish, Latrobe, will receive the award for philanthropy. Bridge-Core, an ecumenical social service agency in Indiana, will receive the award for outstanding human service organization.

Angelo is a long-time member of The Arc, an advocacy group for people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, and continues to make presentations for the group locally and nationally. A former mathematics professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he is active in the parish and is a member of the Knights of Columbus council in Indiana.

The Walkers have been involved in numerous efforts to support their parish, Christ the Divine Teacher School, Latrobe, and diocesan initiatives, most recently serving as chairpersons of the diocesan leadership team for the "Today’s Challenge ~ Tomorrow’s Hope" Capital & Endowment Campaign for the Diocese of Greensburg. They also served as leaders of their parish’s capital campaign effort and have supported Catholic Charities and efforts to provide financial assistance for families in Catholic schools.

Bridge-Core, which was founded five years ago, helps the homeless in the Indiana area through awareness programs and fundraisers. The group’s volunteers include parishioners of Catholic parishes in Indiana.

Bishop Lawrence E. Brandt will present the awards and deliver remarks, and Msgr. Raymond E. Riffle, managing director of Catholic Charities, will serve as master of ceremonies.

All net proceeds from the dinner go directly to material assistance. In its 12 years, the Salt and Light dinner has netted nearly $700,000 to help more than 6,000 individuals and families in the diocese’s four counties — Armstrong, Fayette, Indiana and Westmoreland — according to Catholic Charities’ records.

The Salt and Light Dinner begins with a reception at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7, with remarks and award presentations following. Tickets are $125 each and include entry into the grand prize drawing. Chinese and silent auctions will also be held.
