Jim Froelicher: Indiana parishioner mirrors Jesus serving the needy

A longtime parishioner of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish in Indiana was honored as a man who mirrors the model of Jesus who compassionately serves the physical and spiritual needs of those among him.

James Froelicher received the Catholic Charities’ Communities of Salt and Light award for humanitarianism.

"We see in Jim Froelicher an example of the discipleship of compassion, care, patience and availability," said Msgr. Raymond E. Riffle, managing director of Catholic Charities, who introduced Froelicher. "Jim has truly been open to those in need. He has served the less fortunate of his parish and diocese out of his love for God and has tried to share that love of God by serving others."

Froelicher is involved in many charitable and service organizations throughout the diocese, and Msgr. Riffle extolled him as a man whose respect for life — which includes the way in which people treat one another — is profound. And under Froelicher’s leadership, the St. Vincent de Paul Society has expanded to serve a greater number of people in a wider region of Indiana County.

"Wow!" Froelicher said with a smile, noting he was not only shocked to be nominated for the award, but shocked to win.

Acknowledging family, friends and co-workers for their support, he said the foremost note of thanks goes to God.

"This is not my work, but this is his work on me and through me," Froelicher said, adding that God has provided him with opportunities and abilities so that he might reach out to help others.

"He’s touched my heart to be open to the pain and suffering of others," he said. "I’m just trying to live that Gospel with the assistance of the Holy Spirit."

Froelicher credited his parents as his first role models.

"Their example of compassion and action on behalf of those who were in need opened me to feel the responsibility of helping and sharing," Froelicher said.

"I hope they’re both smiling tonight as they look down from heaven," he added, fighting tears.

Froelicher tenderly thanked his wife, Pam, for her love, friendship, support and partnership in everything he does.

He gratefully acknowledged Father William J. Kiel, his pastor, who nominated him for the award, lauding him as the man whom he most respects.

"Father Bill is teaching me to be open and to trust in the will of God more than my own will," Froelicher said.

"Finally, thank you to Catholic Charities and Bishop Brandt for finding me worthy of such a special award," he added.
