 About the Golden Apple Award

The Diocese of Greensburg is excited to celebrate excellence in teaching in our Catholic schools by recognizing exceptional educators with a Golden Apple Award.  This Award honors outstanding individuals who symbolize excellence in and out of the classroom, are committed to Catholic values and are devoted to teaching in the Catholic School system.  The Diocese recognizes the impact that each teacher has on the development of a child and welcomes the opportunity to express appreciation through the Golden Apple Award program.

The Golden Apple Award will be given to a total of three teachers within the 13 schools of the Diocese of Greensburg.  The award will consist of a beautiful engraved Golden Apple award, a certificate and $5,000 cash for the awardee’s unrestricted personal use.

 Eligibility

The candidate should:

  • Be a practicing Catholic in good standing who demonstrates Catholic values
  • Be a full-time teacher who has been employed in one of the following Diocese of Greensburg Catholic Schools for a minimum of the last three years:
    • Aquinas Academy, Greensburg
    • The Cardinal Maida Academy, Vandergrift
    • Christ the Divine Teacher School, Latrobe
    • Conn-Area Catholic School, Connellsville
    • The Divide Redeemer School, Ford City
    • Geibel Catholic Junior-Senior High School
    • Greensburg Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School
    • Mary Queen of Apostles School, New Kensington
    • Mother of Sorrows School, Murrysville
    • Queen of Angels Catholic School, North Huntingdon
    • St. Bernard Regional School, Indiana
    • St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic School, Uniontown
    • St. Sebastian Regional School, Belle Vernon
  • Be nominated by a fellow Diocesan teacher, current parent/guardian, elementary/middle school student with their parent/guardian, high school student, former parent or alum
  • Hold a valid teaching certificate for her/his current position

Note:  The Golden Apple Award may be received only once.  Previous winners are not eligible.

 Nominations

Nominations are no longer being accepted.

A planning committee comprised of business leaders, community leaders and individuals invested in the Catholic School system has been created to conduct the selection process.  All applications will be reviewed blindly with names, schools and geographic locations removed.

All applications will be evaluated based on the following point system:

​10 ​Education, experience and professional development
​10 ​Leadership qualities
​10 ​Service to school
​10 ​Service to church
​10 ​Service to community
​10 ​Applicant’s essay
​60 Total Points

 

All awards will be presented at A Celebration of Catholic Schools breakfast on Tuesday, October 30 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Stratigo’s Banquet Centre.  Awardees must be in attendance at this event.
